SOCOM Confrontation
Official Release Date: September 16, 2008
"We've brought you
several big stories on SOCOM Confrontation in the past month, but today Sony
passed on one more important piece of information: a release date. The
latest iteration of the popular online shooter franchise will be arriving on
September 16th.

To celebrate this news, tomorrow Sony will be launching SOCOM.com, an online
community site devoted to the game. Pre-release, the site will provide
regular news updates as well as a place for fans to get together. Once the
game has launched, gamers will discover full integration with the website,
including near real-time stat tracking, clan management tools, and more.
You can check out 1UP's most recent online preview of SOCOM from the
beginning of the year, but if you want a more up-to-date and in-depth look
at the game, you'll want to pick up the May issue of EGM -- the one with the
colorful SOCOM cover below. Check it out on newsstands next week or in your
mailbox any day now if you're a subscriber."

David Doel's interview with
Joe Rybicki of 1up.com/Electronic Gaming Monthly
"My interview with
Joe Rybicki (of the 1up network and writer of the EGM article)
I was able to do a Q&A with someone the SOCOM community should be familiar
with by now, Joe Rybicki, who free lances for the 1up network and is the man
behind the SOCOM Confrontation EGM cover story arriving this week. I'm sure
you will all enjoy this interview, and look for the 1-word peak at his cover
story at the end of the Q&A."

SOCOM Confrontation's
Special Forces Line-up
As we revealed early
this month, the May issue of EGM has a blow-out cover story on SOCOM
Confrontation. Along with the loads of other Confrontation info in the
story, you'll find a list of all the different special forces included in
the game. Joining a special force is now a perk associated with joining a
clan; solo players will still be able to play as either commandos or
mercenaries, but special forces (and their associated uniforms, gear, and
weapons) will only be available to clan members.
Only, er, we got the
list a little bit wrong in the mag. So here, for the first time anywhere, is
the complete, correct lineup of special forces available at launch, complete
with links to Wikipedia entries for the real-life organizations.
-
Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEALs, United States)
-
Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom)
-
Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK, Germany)
-
Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain)
-
1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine (1er
RPIMa, France)
To reiterate,
neither Italy's COMSUBIM nor France's GIGN will be included in the game...
at least not in the initial release. You can get all the other information
you need on SOCOM Confrontation when the May issue of EGM begins arriving in
subscriber's mailboxes next week!

BestDamnSOCOMLeague.com
- The Best Damn SOCOM League is a "13v13 BIG Maps" 2008 and a "8v8 Small
Maps" Season. It will have 16 clans battling twice a week over the course
of 16 games in a League structure similar to that of the NFL.

Each "war" will consist of a best 2 out of 3 maps, the results decided by
the 8/13 players on each squad. Wars are played every Monday & Wednesday night
at 7:30PM PST / 9:30PM EST.
It is the League’s expectation that the entire
season will encompass 8 weeks, concluding with an 8-team playoff to
determine the Best Damn SOCOM League 2008 13v13 Big AND Small Maps Season
Champions.

SOCOM Confrontation in EGM
Dan "Shoe" Hsu, Editor-in-Chief of EGM
Magazine (same people who own 1up.com) was interviewed recently and spoke of
SOCOM confrontation.

"SOCOM Confrontation is
the next SOCOM game for PlayStation 3. It's going to be downloadable uhh
straight to your PlayStation 3. They went quiet on that. Uhh When they first
came out, and showed the game to everyone it kinda got some bad feedback. It
didn't look that good. So actually umm,
I don't know if I can say this.... but I'll say it anyway. It's actually our
next cover story. Like in umm, probably in 2 issues from now for most
readers like uh if you're just getting the new issue now (the March issue
with the PS3 and Snake from MGS4 on the cover). It's the issue after that.
We're wrapping that deadline up. We're going have.... NO NO NO! I'm actually way ahead! This maybe
two, three months from now (that would be the beginning of April or May AKA
the May or June issue of EGM). But we're going to have the 'first
look' of the new SOCOM, SOCOM (confrontation) since forever now;
I think it's been a year now, with the improved graphics and we're going to
talk about all this cool stuff that is in the game. So I think we're more
excited about it than we were at this time last year."
The short version is we should have more info
on SOCOM Confrontation by April or May. Looks like EGM's "Fall of
2008" may actually pan out as the approximate release date.

Confrontation news drought
may end soon!
Because of Sony's strange "news blockade" placed on Slant Six, we really have
not gotten new intel or videos for confrontation since July of 2007. However, according to
"SealTeam-6", a dev with Slant Six, the news drought may end in late
February.

In his latest post on the
SCEA
Confrontation message board SealTeam-6 wrote
"The team is cranking on important milestones right
now and the game is looking and playing better than ever." He
also apologized for the lack of new intel but went on in his post to say
"I *believe* that the information drought is going to
improve towards the end of February. The team is firing on all cylinders in
full production mode, building, tuning, tweaking and testing and with more
content and features coming online every day, the game has never been more
exciting to work on. Hang in there guys, it will be worth the wait!"
This
is just a guess, but going by the time-line SealTeam-6 gave us, I imagine
we'll see something at the 2008 GDC. The
Gamers Developers
Conference (GDC) is February 18-22, 2008. This seems to line up
with when SealTeam-6 believes the information drought will end, and seems to
be the most likely venue for releasing the intel.
